Heroes of Newerth

Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is an action real-time strategy video game developed by S2 Games for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, released in english in 2010 (re-released as a free-to-play game on July 29, 2011) and set in a fantasy world. The game was heavily inspired by the Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne custom map Defense of the Ancients(DotA).

Heroes of Newerth puts two teams of players against each other: the Legion and the Hellbourne. Both teams are based at opposite sides of a map. Players on each team choose ten of 2 heroes, featuring a variety of abilities and advantages to compensate for any shortcomings. Players control a single hero from a top-down perspective, while common features of real time strategy games such as base management and resource collection are removed. Every hero has four abilities that may be acquired and upgraded as the hero gains experience and levels up.

There are now three account types under the new free-to-play model:
  1. Basic- The standard, free account new players will receive upon sign up.
  2. Verified- Basic accounts that have been upgraded through a show of commitment to their account, by either purchasing Goblin Coins or surpassing a certain threshold of play time.
  3. Legacy- Paid user accounts that existed prior to the free-to-play model. These accounts receive a lifetime of free access to all HoN heroes and are able to play in Verified Only games, to ensure that experts and beginners are separated. Legacy accounts can no longer be purchased.
